The preparation of a novel monolithic super-microporous lamellar silica with a room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) as the template, employing the nanocasting technique was reported. RTILs are organic salts with low melting points, sometimes as low as -96°C. They possess a wide range of liquidus temperatures, in some cases in excess of 400°C. A combination of negligible vapor pressure, high ionic conductivity, and thermal stability makes ionic liquids effective as environmentally friendly organic solvent alternatives for catalysis, electrochemistry, liquid-liquid extraction, and organic liquid-phase reactions.
