Effect of high-energy heavy-ion irradiation in 57Co-doped CuO

Effect of 100 MeV Ag ion irradiation on Co-57-doped CuO has been studied using X-ray diffraction, Mossbauer spectroscopy and elastic recoil detection analysis. Irradiation leads to a substantial oxygen loss in the sample. X-ray diffraction measurements show a considerable damage production in the CuO lattice up to a depth much larger than the range of the bombarding ions. The sample gets amorphized up to the penetration depth of Ag ions. The Neel temperature of the damaged portion of the sample is considerably decreased. The annealing behaviour of the amorphized region is characterized by a broad distribution of activation energies. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
