With worldwide occurrence and no evidence of decreased prevalence, trichomoniasis and bacterial vaginosis, continue to serve as major challenges to the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic modalities. Major complications of these so-called "nuisance infections" are being increasingly recognized. Symptomatic and asymptomatic types of vaginitis facilitate HIV transmission, and therefore their eradication may offer a potential solution to reducing heterosexual spread.
