A simple approach for determining the in situ fracture toughness of ceramic platelets used in composite materials by numerical simulations

摘要
A parametric study using a numerical model was carried out to determine a realistic value of fracture toughness for alumina platelets embedded in a borosilicate glass matrix. The crack propagation direction normal to platelet larger axis was investigated. Results confirmed the value of fracture toughness to be 1.76 MPa m1/2 as they make the numerical and experimental results coincide consistently.
