摘要：

Despite an annual per capita expenditure of more than $5,000 on health care in 2001, the United States was ranked 72nd in the efficiency of use of health care resources in a study of 191 countries conducted by the World Health Organization. The authors review the various types of health care economic analyses. Cost-utility analysis is the instrument that will provide an information system that allows the identification of interventions that are of minimal or no benefit as well as those that are the most valuable. This information system, value-based medicine, should allow substantial savings in health care expenditures and improve the quality of care at the same time.
