This article describes results of a continuing effort in development of a "second generation" biological single ion hit facility (SIHF) at GSI, Darmstadt, Germany. It describes the rationale, developmental details and current status of the SIHF at GSI. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
