ESR linewidth of graphitelike pyrocarbon: A time-resolved investigation of the chemical vapor deposition process

Temperature-dependent measurements of the electron spin resonance (ESR) signal have been performed on graphitelike pyrocarbon films formed by chemical vapor deposition from methane/argon gas mixture. Room-temperature measurements have shown a pronounced dependence of the ESR linewidth on the time evolution of the gas phase at reaction temperature (similar to1100 degreesC). Three interactions have been proposed to explain this behavior. The temperature-dependent measurements confirm that, while the hyperfine interaction with built-in protons broadens the ESR signal, motional narrowing occurs due to conduction electrons and an additional exchange interaction between pairs of localized electrons takes place. The exchange interaction between conduction electrons and the localized moments is analyzed in terms of the exchange coupling model.
