Probing the non-mevalonate pathway to phytol in the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. UTEX 2470 using deuterium-labeled glucose

The biosynthesis of phytol in the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. UTEX 2470 was examined using 1-H-2-D-glucose, 2-H-2-D-glucose, 2,3,4,6,6-H-2(5)-D-glucose, and 1,2,3,4,5,6,6-H-2(7)-D-glucose. Analysis of deuterium NMR spectra indicated that deuterium from the glucose precursors labels C1, C4, and C5 of the IPP units of phytol, while no labeling is observed at C2 of the IPP derived units.
