摘要
A review on the wide variety of cells and cellular functions regulated by ionized calcium (Ca2+) is given as well as the history of the development of caged Ca2+ molecules referring to the requirements of the experimental application of each photosensitive probe. The term "caged" is defined to be the functional encapsulation of a chemical messenger in a biologically inert and photosensitive form. Specific topics include: on what does Ca2+ inside cells; the key biological applications of caged Ca2+; and finally, the two-photon uncaging of Ca2+ in living cells.
