The Chernobyl accident exposed people located hundreds of kilometres away tofallout, but increases in cancer incidence asa result of the accident seem, at present, tobe restricted to one tumour type. Thesethyroid tumours form the largest number ofcancers of one type, caused by a singleevent on one date, ever recorded.Epidemiological, pathological and molecularstudies have provided new insights into thecarcinogenic process, as well as lessons forfuture nuclear accidents. © 2002 Nature Publishing Group.
