Continuous and pulsed Doppler power spectral density in steady flow: An experimental investigation

Powder spectral density (PSD) was measured in steady flow conditions in continuous-wave (CW) and pulsed wave (PW) ultrasound Doppler mode. The estimated PSD of the Doppler backscattered signal showed discrepancies from the expected value which was more severe in the PW mode than in the CW mode. Intrinsic spectral broadening (ISB) was significantly larger in PW mode than in the CW mode. Interpretation of Doppler PSD measurement results required caution. Artefacts due to intrinsic random effects related to standard signal manipulations and experimental conditions were severe and mode-dependent, and significantly affected the estimated flow parameters.
