Thermal effects on the transmission spectra of long-period fiber gratings

We present a detailed theoretical and experimental analysis of the thermal effects on the transmission spectra of long-period fiber gratings. We discuss in particular how the resonance wavelength of a long-period fiber grating and its contrast vary with the temperature. It is shown explicitly that the temperature sensitivity of the resonance wavelength can be positive or negative, and the strength of the grating can increase or decrease significantly with the temperature. A good agreement between our theoretical and experimental results is obtained. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
