Endoscopic, surgical, and chemoradiotherapy developments have placed greater emphasis on the need for accurate preoperative staging of rectal cancer. Technical improvements in endorectal ultrasound, and particularly in magnetic resonance imaging, support these clinical needs to provide a basis for proper therapeutic selection.
