Stable axially chiral atropisomers have been prepared by reaction of 2-aminosugars with o,o'-disubstituted aryl isocyanates and isothiocyanates; these rotationally restricted heterobiaryls constitute a novel class of atropisomers for use in atroposelective reactions.
