CLEO and CESR upgrades: Near- and long-term development

The CLEO detector and the CESR collider are both in the midst of a staged upgrade. ''Phase II'' of this plan is just being completed, enhancing CLEO's tracking capabilities and bringing CESR instantaneous luminosities to 6 . 10(32) cm(-2)s(-1). During a shutdown planned for late 1997 CLEO will install a Ring-imaging Cherenkov system for enhanced particle identification, as well as a new drift chamber and silicon vertex detector. CESR will install superconducting RF cavities at that time, so that peak luminosities will exceed 10(33) cm(-2) s(-1).
