Michael addition reactions of beta-ketoesters with a variety of alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl compounds proceed efficiently using a Yb(OTf)(3) catalyst either on a silica gel support or at high pressure. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
