Corrosion protection on copper by imidazole and its derivatives

The efficiency of imidazole and its derivatives (4-methylimidazole, 4-methyl-5-hydroxymethylimidazole, 1 phenyl-4-methylimidazole, 1-[p-toly]-4-methylimidazole) for corrosion inhibition of copper in 0.5 M hydrochloric acid (HCl) was investigated. Corrosion inhibition was studied using impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic methods. Polarization resistances calculated from the alternating current (AC) impedance measurements were in good agreement with those obtained from direct current (DC) polarization measurements. Copper samples also were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and x-ray microanalysis. These studies showed that 1-(p-tolyl)-4 methylimidazole had the best inhibitory efficiency.
