We describe a praseodymium doped arsenic sulphide-based single mode fibre with optical loss of 3.3 dB m-(1) at 1.3 mu m. The composition of the core glass was As37.8Ce1.3 Ga-0.5 S-60.4 doped with 760 ppm wt. praseodymium. The small core-large numerical aperture structure was produced by a combination of the double crucible method and rod-in tube processing. The fibre has a core double dad structure. Based on a laminar model the parameters of viscous how and the dimensions of concentric crucible tubes were optimized. The favourable ratio of outer diameter relative to that of the innerclad core is about 10:1. The main problem of preparation of the single mode fibre is the quality of interface innerclad-overcladding. By polishing the inner tube surface the heterophase impurities could be decreased.
