The purpose of preoperative screening is to establish an understanding of both the nature and extent of medical illnesses that may influence the hospital course in patients scheduled for surgery. This article explores sources of risk of patients undergoing surgery and describes strategies that may be useful in identifying, quantifying, and modifying them.
