Infrared to visible conversion of radiation in some Ho3+-doped oxide and fluoride crystals

The presence of upconversion processes in some Ho3- doped oxides and fluorides (YAlO3, LiTaO3, YVO4, BaY2F8, LiYF4, K5LaLi2F10) was investigated under continuous wave excitation within the 740-1000 nm spectral range. In some of the materials investigated, excitation into the I-5(4) or/and I-5(5) multiplets brings about the relatively strong upconverted green emission due to the S-5(2) --> I-5(8) transition. The excited state absorption spectra, upconverted emission spectra as well as possible mechanisms of excitation are presented. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.
