Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is recognized as a fast, real-time method for elemental analysis normally without the need for sample preparation. LIBS is nowadays a good candidate for many industrial and environmental applications: many of them require the highest performance combination of detector and spectrograph while remaining compact. This paper investigates the advantages of the ideal combination of spectrograph and detector using a high resolution, high dynamic range ICCD (intensified charge coupled device) and an echelle spectrograph. The patented design of this echelle(1,2) makes line identification possible, as the orders do not merge due to the dispersion balanced order sorting system.
