Spectroscopic investigation of the nonequilibrium excitation of NO(A) hydrocarbon nitrous oxide flames

A spectroscopic study of three hydrocarbon-nitrous oxide flames was undertaken to investigate the spectral character of the NO gamma band (A-X) and NO beta band (B-X) emission. A high-resolution (0.5 Angstrom) 1 m spectrometer was used to record emission spectra from fuel rich atmospheric flames in bandpasses corresponding to the NO gamma and beta bands at 230 and 304 nm, respectively, as well as the OH(A-X) band at 306 nm. In addition, a finite rate chemical kinetics model (CHEMKIN) was exercised to provide a baseline for the flame characteristics. It was found that the OH(A) rotational temperature deduced from the spectra was in good agreement with the predicted flame temperature. However, the NO(A) rotational and vibrational temperature exceeded the flame temperature by over 1000 K for all three flames. Surprisingly, no emission from the NO beta system (B-X) was detected.
