1. The offshore fishery around the Falkland Islands is largely based on two species of squid, which are important to both the Falklands' economy and the ecosystem. 2. This paper reviews the fisheries management system used in the Falklands' fishery. Effort limitation is used as this is considered to be appropriate for short lived squid species and is suitable for the Falklands, where manpower resources are limited. 3. The potential for the fishery to impact on wildlife, particularly seabirds is considered. Longline fisheries are associated with the greatest mortalities of seabirds, although effective mitigation measures can reduce such mortalities to very low levels.
