An overview of medical therapy for gastroesophageal reflux disease is given. The efficacies of lifestyle changes, over-the-counter medications, antacids, antisecretory agents, and promotility agents are discussed. Special consideration is given to the often inappropriate use of combination therapy. Maintenance therapy is emphasized and a hierarchy of therapeutic effects of commonly used agents is suggested.
