摘要
This paper reviews briefly the present knowledge on track formation and track effects in quartz and vitreous silica. The two major track models, shock mechanism and thermal spike, are outlined and critically examined for their compatibility with experimental data. A combination of continuum mechanics, non-equilibrium thermodynamics and molecular dynamics provides a self-consistent frame which clearly favors a thermal spike as the late stage of track formation.
