Samarium(III) nitrate hexahydrate as a catalyst is used as an alternative to conventional acid catalysts in the von Pechmann condensation of phenols with ethyl acetoacetate leading to the formation of coumarin derivatives. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
