Tension-driven cracking of an expanded austenite layer

摘要
The mode of damage in an expanded austenite layer on stainless steel, subjected to monotonic tensile loading, was investigated. The cracking damage was analyzed by tensile tests using a mechanical device. It was found that damage was confined to the expanded austenite layer and was characterized by many parallel cracks along the entire layer. The results show that the cracking of the layer starts at a strain of 1.85%.
