Corrosion and wear protection of tube inner walls by ion beam sputter coating

摘要
The inner walls of steel and titanium tubes were coated with titanium nitride and tantalum films by ion beam sputtering the metals from conical targets which were pushed through the tubes. The corrosion protection ability of these films was tested in acetic acid and nitric acid. Results of electrochemical measurements show that ion beam sputter deposited films yield an efficient corrosion protection of the tubes. Additionally, the titanium nitride films lead to a reduction in wear in ball-on-flat tests.
