A brief review is given on the electronic and optical properties of carbon nanotubes, The topics include an effective-mass description of the electronic states, optical absorption and excitons, two-photon absorption, excitons in metallic nanotubes, their fine structure and the Aharonov-Bohm effect, and exciton absorption for perpendicular polarization.
