Dinuclear diimine palladium(II) and platinum(II) hydroxo and amido complexes: synthesis and X-ray crystal structures

Treatment of L2MCl2 with AgBF4 in wet tetrahydrofuran (THF)-CH2Cl2 or wet CH2Cl2-ethanol yields the dinuclear palladium(II) and platinum(II) hydroxo complexes [L2M(mu-OMe)](2)(BF4)(2) (L-2 = diimine, M = Pd, Pt). Reaction of the dihydroxo bridged complexes with aromatic amines (ArNH2,) yields the corresponding diamido bridged complexes [L2M(mu-NHAr)](2)(BF4)(2). [L2M(mu-OH)](2)(BF4)(2) is unstable in methanol and converts to [M( CL-OMe)](2)(BF4)(2) The structures of several of these complexes were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction and show the expected edge-shared square-planar Pt centers with bridging hydroxo, methoxo, or amido groups. Attempts to deprotonate the hydroxo and amido complexes were not successful. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd All rights reserved.
