摘要
Psychodynamic theorists often believe clinical judges to be the best source of personality data. Contemporary personality theorists, on the other hand, treat individuals' responses to items on personality tests as the most appropriate source of personality data. In personality domains such as emotion inhibition, or defensiveness, a combination of these two data sources may provide valuable, albeit different, information. To demonstrate this postulate, participants completed a self-report measure of emotion inhibition, underwent a stressful interpersonal task during which blood pressure reactivity was recorded, and then were rated for observed emotion inhibition. As expected, observational and self-reports of emotion inhibition appeared to assess differing tendencies, but both additively predicted cardiovascular reactivity. Self- and expert-reports of personality characteristics may often complement each other, and when these measures are informed by empirical/psychometric considerations they can both contribute to the understanding of areas such as psychophysiological reactivity.
