Laser-induced alkali atom desorption from thin sodium films on quartz prisms

The dynamics of visible (lambda = 532 nm) and near-infrared (lambda = 1064 nm) laser-induced desorption of alkali atoms from thin metal films deposited on quartz prisms is investigated. Upon desorption the atoms show non-thermal kinetic energy distributions with mean kinetic energies of 24, 150 and 350 meV at 532 mn and 14 meV at 1064 nm, independent of laser fluence. The thresholds for the appearance of these contributions are 0, 50 and 110 mJ/cm(2), respectively. No threshold is observed for 1064 nm desorption. The results are discussed in terms of direct electronic versus multiphomon scattering assisted desorption. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
