Haq+ Structures in Proton Wires inside Nanotubes

(Chemical Equation Presented) The hydrated carborane acid H(CHB 11I11)·8H2O crystallizes in nanometer-diameter tubes of. Haq+ enclosed by walls of carborane anions. Three different types of Haq+ clusters are found in these tubes: a symmetrical H13O6+ ion with an unusually elongated Zundel-type H5O2 + core, two hydrated H7O3+ ions, and an unprecedented H17O8+ ion having a nearly square core. All of the Haq+ cations show unexpectedly longer O⋯O separations than in discrete Haq+ ions, indicating greater delocalization of positive charge. The centrosymmetric H aq+ ions are linked via short H bonds, forming a true one-dimensional proton wire. © 2009 American Chemical Society.
