摘要
This article analyzes the relationship of low and very low-birth weight to impairment at birth; developmental delays in language, social-behavioral, and motor skills; limitations in hearing, vision, and respiratory functions; and injury during the first 3 years of life. The study documents the pervasive and lasting impact of very low-birth weight on child outcomes, and points to the role of social disadvantage in placing mothers at greater risk of a very low-birth weight child and an unfavorable family environment. Programs designed to provide specific support to mothers and their children tan be effective in reducing the likelihood a child will be of a very low-birth weight and also can help buffer these children from negative outcomes.
