The field of metallacarborane chemistry has grown in many different directions and now interfaces with several other disciplines including metal cluster and organometallic chemistry, transition-metal catalysis, materials science, environmental science, and biomedical applications. In this turn-of-the-century overview, some of the more significant recent developments and trends in this area are selectively examined and an attempt is made to project some useful directions in which this chemistry might develop over the next decade or two.
