Photonic band gap effect in layer-by-layer metallic photonic crystals

Theoretical models have been developed to investigate the reflection and transmission spectra, and photonic band structure for a midinfrared layer-by-layer metallic photonic crystal. It is found that photonic band gap effects due to global coupling between different unit cells in different layers play a key role in the formation of the lowest stop band gap extending to zero frequency and a high transmission passband adjacent to the stop band gap. Excellent agreement of theoretical results with experimental measurements is achieved. (C) 2003 American Institute of Physics.
