The stability of a protective Al2O3 layer on a niobium ion-implanted γ-TiAl intermetallic compound

摘要
An ion implantation technique was used to investigate the oxidation behavior of TiAl intermetallic compounds by adding various alloying elements without metallurgical limitation. Niobium ion implantation into γ-TiAl formed a protective Al2O3 layer on the oxidized surface. The transverse cross-sections of the oxidation scale on the unimplanted and niobium ion-implanted γ-TiAl samples were examined using a scanning electron microscope.
