Contemporary pathology of prostate cancer

Despite its relatively small size, the prostate accounts for a substantial and disproportionate incidence of health problems in older men, the most significant of which is cancer. This article describes contemporary aspects of prostate cancer pathology, including a discussion of pertinent aspects of the pathologic features of premalignant lesions, frankly malignant lesions, and suspicious lesions that fall short of an absolute diagnosis of carcinoma. Variant types of prostatic adenocarcinoma are also described, together with potential diagnostic pitfalls.
