Estimation of digestible energy in dry extruded dog foods

Multiple regression analysis was carried out for the results of digestibility determinations carried out with dogs fed 45 different dry extruded foods in which proximate nutrients, detergent fibre and alpha-linked plus free glucose (alpha-Glc) had been analysed. The following formula for estimating the digestible energy (DE) was found to be the most accurate: DE (MJ) = 21.7 x crude protein (kg) + 36.8 x total lipids (kg) + 17.3 x (alpha-Glc) (kg) (r(2)=0.99; s(xy)=2.8%) Inclusion of detergent fibre did not improve the accuracy of estimation.
