Guiding high-intensity laser pulses through hollow fibers: self-phase modulation and cross-talk of guided modes

摘要
Self-phase modulation of short laser pulses and cross-talk of waveguide modes in a gas-filled hollow fiber are theoretically studied. The slowly varying envelope approximation is employed to derive analytical expressions for the amplitude and the phase of a laser pulse undergoing self-phase modulation in leaky modes of a hollow fiber. These expressions are then used to examine the effects related to waveguide losses, self-phase modulation of a short laser pulse, and excitation of higher order waveguide modes in a hollow fiber. The cross-talk of waveguide modes in a hollow fiber is shown to open an additional channel of energy losses. An analytical solution to the equation for the slowly varying envelope of a higher order waveguide mode building up in the field of the fundamental-mode field is derived. A strategy for optimizing hollow fibers for high-intensity pulse transmission and pulse compression is outlined. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.
