Shape-induced ultraviolet absorption of CuO shuttlelike nanoparticles

Homogeneous shuttlelike nanoparticles of CuO are synthesized using pulsed-laser induced liquid-solid interface reaction. The shape-induced ultraviolet absorption (258 nm) is observed in the ultraviolet absorption spectrum of CuO shuttlelike nanoparticles. Theoretical calculations on the basis of discrete dipole approximation are employed to pursue the physical origin of the anomalous UV absorption peak. Both experiments and theories show that the shape of nanoparticles has a great influence on the optical properties. (c) 2007 American Institute of Physics.
