Effect of temperature on silicon particle damage in A356 alloy

Thermal effects on the fraction of damaged silicon particles in a chill cast A356 aluminum alloy were studied. Notch tensile tests were performed at -51 °C, 21 °C, and 121 °C at a strain rate of 0.01 per second until fracture occurred. As the rate of silicon damage increased with inverse temperature, contribution of fracture mechanics to crack initiation and propagation was expected to be higher at lower temperatures. It was observed that large and elongated silicon particles fracture more frequently.
