Preparation of poly(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorostyrene) and block copolymers with styrene by ATRP

A report on the polymerization of 2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorostyrene using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), involving both homo- and block copolymerization with styrene was presented. The kinetic analysis revealed the polymerization to be first order with respect to monomer up to almost 48% monomer conversion. As the conversion was relatively fast, this reflected the electron withdrawing character of the fluorines on the phenyl ring.
