Refinement of magnetic structures with x rays: Nd as a test case

摘要
We present a magnetic structural refinement using resonant magnetic x-ray scattering to investigate the antiferromagnetic structure of single-crystal elemental neodymium at 10 K. By comparison with neutron-diffraction results, we show that x rays can be used for refinement of complex magnetic structures. However, unlike neutrons, x rays distinguish between the magnetic responses of the two different Nd sites in the crystal structure. Our fits to the observed intensities are significantly improved by the inclusion of a scattering vector-dependent term reminiscent of a form factor. The theoretical issues underlying our observations are discussed.
