One-pot, one-catalyst synthesis of graft copolymers by controlled ROMP and ATRP polymerizations

A one-pot synthesis approach for the preparation of graft polymers based on a ROMP skeleton with PMMA grafts using a single catalyst was presented. This methodology relied on the controlled activity of Cl 2Ru(CHPh)(PCy 3) 2 for two distinct polymerization processes with the selected monomer structures. It was found that a wide range of materials with tunable properties can be easily prepared using this approach. The results show that the initiation for ROMP is complete, which indicates that the active ROMP propagating species can promote ATRP.
