Vinylcyclopropane was introduced to the chemical world in the 19th century. Today, the structure of vinylcyclopropane is known in considerable detail and has been scrutinized in any number of theoretical investigations. This paper concentrates on the stereochemical and mechanistic aspects of the vinylcyclopropane rearrangement. A small sampling of related rearrangements and synthetic applications is included as a reminder that mechanistic concerns cover just one facet of the rich chemistry exhibited by vinylcyclopropanes and various closely related structures.
