All-optical wavelength conversion of a 10-Gb/s pseudorandom bit sequence (PRBS) signal is demonstrated for the first time in an in-line integrated semiconductor optical amplifier/distributed feedback (SOA/DFB) laser requiring an input power of only 0.7 mW for similar to 10-dB extinction ratio. The wavelength converted signal is then transmitted over 375 km of nonzero dispersion shifted fiber resulting in a small negative conversion penalty (-0.2 +/- 0.1 dB) compared to the back-to-back signal.
