PH-INDUCED PERMEATION CONTROL OF A POLYION-COMPLEXED LANGMUIR-BLODGETT-FILM WITH A CHANNEL-LIKE PATHWAY OF POLY(METHACRYLIC ACID) SEGMENT

A novel polyion-complexed Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film having a channel-like pathway for transporting ions was prepared from a polyion-complexed monolayer composed of a newly synthesized triblock polyanion (poly(styrenesulfonate-6/block-methacrylic acid-block-styrenesulfonate), SnMmSn) and a doublechain, cationic amphiphile. The cationic amphiphile was found to complex preferentially with poly-(styrenesulfonate) segments but not with poly(methacrylic acid) segments at low pH. The polyion complexes formed stable surface monolayers which were affected by pH in the subphase. Control of the KC1 permeability across the LB film composed of those monolayers was performed by pH based on the conformational change of the poly(methacrylic acid) segment. © 1990, American Chemical Society.
