A STUDY OF ULTRAVIOLET OBJECTS NEAR THE NORTH GALACTIC POLE WITH FAUST

摘要
We present a follow-up study of a sample of objects detected in a wide-field, far-ultraviolet observation of the north Galactic pole region. The image was obtained by the FAUST experiment during the ATLAS-1 flight on the Space Shuttle Atlantis in 1992 March. We have identified nearly all the 81 ultraviolet (UV) sources found in the image using catalog data and ground-based observations. Optical spectra and CCD photometry for some of the objects, taken at the Wise Observatory, are shown and discussed. Most of the sources are A and F stars, but we have also identified seven galaxies, one active galactic nucleus, four white dwarfs, and four known hot subdwarfs. We compare the star counts with a UV stellar population model and find good agreement.
