Preparation of spherical TiO2 powders for advanced ceramics was investigated using an emulsion precipitation method. Water-in-oil emulsions containing a TiCl4 solution in the aqueous droplets were prepared. Precipitation of the powders inside the droplets was achieved using the thermal instability of the Ti precursor at elevated temperatures. Powders obtained by this simple method were characterized with respect to size and by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform IR spectroscopy, thermal analysis and dilatometry.
